Holston Habitat uses volunteer labor to build and repair houses in partnership with individuals and families with limited financial resources and a housing need. The houses are then sold to qualified applicants at no profit and financed with an affordable Holston Habitat mortgage. Qualified families must complete volunteer "sweat equity" hours, complete the Homeowner Education Program, and save for closing costs prior to construction on the home beginning. Financial literacy and credit repair are addressed with each home buyer during the require education program. In addition to the home ownership and home repair programs, Holston Habitat operates two ReStores (located in Kingsport and Johnson City). ReStore locations accept donations of excess building materials, furniture, housewares, appliances, and other home decor items. These items are sold to the public at a reduced cost, generating funds for Holston Habitats construction programs.
