Buchanan County Department of Social Services - TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families)

TANF is the cash assistance program for very low income families in Virginia. The purpose of the program is to help needy adults take care of their families and become self-sufficient.

Apply at your local DSS office, there is a two step process. First you must fill out the application for benefits, then you must have an interview with an eligibility worker.

Family must include a child that is a U.S citizen or an eligilbe immigrant, be needy, and satisfy certain "good conduct" requirements.
